Gum shellac, 1 lb.; sal-soda, ½ lb.; water, 3 parts; boil all together in a kettle, stirring till dissolved. If it does not all dissolve, add a little more sal-soda; when cool, bottle for use; mix up 2 quarts of oil paint as usual, any color desired, using no turpentine; put 1 pint of the gum shellac mixture with the oil paint when it becomes thick; it can then be reduced with water to a proper thickness to lay on with a brush.
Soft water, 1 gallon; dissolve it in pearlash, 3 oz.; bring to a boil, and slowly add shellac, 1 lb.; when cold it is ready to be added to oil paint in equal proportions.
