A preservative used in curing birds'skins consists of 1 /12lb. of whiting and 1/2lb. of soft soap boiled in 1 pt. of water, with the addition of 1/2oz. of chloride of lime and 1/2 oz. of tincture of musk. This recipe works out at less than a farthing for a starling or blackbird. Instead of musk, tincture of camphor might be used; it is a little cheaper but not so good. In ttsing the preservative it is painted on the inside of the skins; then the " stuffing" is done.
