The lead of a slide valve is the amount by which the steam port is open when the piston is just going to commence its stroke. The supply of steam to the cylinder then commences before the stroke, and the moving piston is brought to rest against a cushion of steam. The amount, of lead varies from 1/16 in. to 5/16 in., according to the type of engine.
