Bate saccharometer is used for determining the gravity of a wort or the percentage of sugar in a solution, in a similar manner to the Sikes' hydrometer. A weight must be placed on the stem of the hydrometer to sink the instrument so that it floats with only a portion of the scale below the surface of the liquid. The reading on the stem is added to that on the weight, and reference must be made to the book of tables supplied with the instrument to determine the gravity or percentage of saccharine matter.
