This machine is used for boring holes, and consists essentially of a round spindle held horizontally or vertically in suitable bearings. The spindle carries a bit or auger and is made to revolve rapidly. The work to be bored is placed on a suitable stand and remains stationary while the spindle moves in the direction of its length as it revolves, until the bit cuts into the material to the desired depth. In some designs of this machine the spindle merely revolves and the material is fed against the bit.
