I. tinctoria: stem 1 1/2-3 feet high, branched in the upper part, glabrous; leaves obovate or oblong, 2-4 inches long, coarsely toothed and stalked, the upper ones lanceolate, with prominent auricles; flowers small, yellow; pods hanging from slender pedicels, about 7-8 lines long and 2-2 1/2 broad, obovate or oblong, tapering to the base. - Cultivated fields, but scarcely naturalized.
