Color, purplish. Few or no leaves on the flowering stems. Those under water pinnately parted into narrow, threadlike divisions. Stems, slender, 1 foot long, with small, sessile, spiked flowers.

Ponds, ditches, and pools, Maine and Vermont to Maryland, and locally westward.
