1 cup oil or fat 2 cups sugar

3/4 quart molasses 2 quarts rye flour 1 tablespoon soda

2 tbspns. baking powder 4 tablespoons ginger

1 1/3 tablespoons allspice 1 teaspoon salt

3 cups water or milk

Cream sugar and oil together, add molasses; beat well. Sift dry ingredients together, and add half to the first mixture. Add milk and remaining flour alternately. Mix well and pour into greased individual cake pans, and bake in moderate oven thirty to forty-five minutes. Or pour into shallow cake pans to depth of one inch or less.
