One cupful of butter creamed with two of sugar; three cup-fuls of flour sifted twice with two teaspoonfuls of Cleveland's Baking Powder; one cupful of cold water; four eggs ; half a tea-spoonful of mace; two cupfuls of white walnut kernels or of hickory nuts, or of blanched almonds dredged in flour, cut up small and added alternately with the sifted flour and stiffened whites.

Cream butter and sugar, add the beaten yolks, the water, and spice, the nuts, whites, and flour.
