Four eggs, one tumbler half full of water mixed with a cup of powdered sugar. Sift two teaspoonfuls of cream of tartar into a cup of flour. When mixed, if the batter is not thick enough, add a little flour. Just before baking, add one teaspoonful of soda dissolved in water. Flavor with either lemon or vanilla.
Beat up four eggs, yolks and whites separate; add to the yolks a tea-cupful and a half of sugar; beat them together, and add to them four tablespoon-fuls of cold water, and one teacupful of flour. Stir the flour into the yolks and sugar, then add the whites of the eggs, after they have been beaten to a froth. Lastly, add a teaspoonful of soda, dissolved in water. Flavor with a few drops of essence of vanilla or of lemon. Bake about an hour.
