Sowing

Dr. Lindley says: - "The seeds should be sown as soon as ripe, or as soon as possible afterwards, in pans filled with very sandy peat; the seeds covered rather more than a quarter of an inch in depth; and the pans placed in any cold pit secured from wet. They require only water enough to keep the soil damp during the winter. They will bear being placed in a warmer situation, but not where there is a moist heat. The young plants should be kept growing as long as possible, by keeping them rather moist during the summer. They must not be removed from the seed-pan until after the second too quickly, or kept dry too long, particularly the first season; at that time they are very small, and are apt to be dried up and exhausted, if care is not taken to prevent it." - Gard. Chron.
