This is a fine introduction, belonging to the M. conspicua section, and perfectly hardy. The flowers are very like those of the hybrid, M. Soulangeana, but easiby distinguished from them by the rich purplish tinge that pervades the coloring of the outer surface of the petals; it is the darkest-flowered magnolia in cultivation. Like M Soulangeana, the flowers appear in early spring in advance of the leaves, and at that season it is one of the most conspicuous, and it is one of the grandest of garden ornaments.
