We have seen it stated that the government ought to take it in hand to encourage the cultivation of cinchona bark for quinine in our country, "because they have been successfully grown in California." At the time this statement was made, the writer of this expressed his doubts of its accuracy, simply because no other Brazilian plant had been found to do well in California. He has since seen the cinchona plants in Berkely County, California, to which allusion was made, and can say from actual observation, that they are not a success by a long way. They were simply eking out a miserable existence.
