It is now some years since the Gardeners' Monthly pointed out that the close cutting which came into use with improved lawn mowers, was the ruination of good lawns, and when complaint has been made about lawns wearing out, or small, creeping weeds crowding out the enervated grass, we have recommended to set the knives higher. We now find by the London Gardeners' Chronicle, that even in that lawn-favored region they find close mowing destroying the grass. It recommends, in many cases, the knives to be set a half or three-quarters higher than it is. Even this is very high to an American lawn-keeper.
