In 1864, Mr. John Smith who had for so many years ably filled the position of curator in these famous gardens, resigned from age and infirmity. Another John Smith, who was gardener to the Duke of Northumberland, was appointed in his place, and fully maintained the high character the gardens had achieved under his former namesake. Now he has had to retire from ill health. The first of the name is still living. Mr. Nicholson, who has long been an assistant in the gardens, has been appointed curator in Mr. Smith's place.
