Diffuse glabrous annuals with alternate dissected exstipulate leaves. Flowers regular, pedunculate, solitary, axillary, white, yellow, or rose. Sepals 5, valvate. Petals 5, sub-perigynous, contorted. Stamens 10, free, inserted with the petals. Fruit of about 5 indehiscent indurated 1-seeded carpels. There are three Californian species, only one of which is in general cultivation. From
