In this plan (50 ft. wide by 108 ft. deep over all) the planting along the western boundary line consists entirely of flowering shrubs with specimen evergreen shrubs along the eastern fence line and at the side of the house, between which are placed hardy perennials to give a little color to the scene.
The hedge along the front is Japanese Barberry, the most satisfactory dwarf growing shrub to be had. The foliage colors beautifully in the Fall and the berries are persistent for a long period. The ends and entrances are defined by the pyramidal Arborvitae.
The formal treatment in the rear takes in the full width of the property and the laundry posts are set within the enclosure, on which climbing Roses are indicated. The Honeysuckle may be adopted as an alternative. To further disguise their utilitarian purpose, bird houses may be placed on top of them.
Flowering shrubs are placed at the corners and entrance to give a little more character to the borders, and the balance of the beds are planted in an assortment of hardy perennials to give a sequence of bloom from Spring till Autumn.
