The outside line of the garden enclosure on the lawn side should always be hidden with foliage. A mixed plantation of flowering shrubs, with a few pyramidal evergreens at the corners, is very effective. In the Southern States, where many of the broad-leaved evergreens are hardy, the English Laurels, Laurestinus and Carolina Cherry, should be more widely used in such plantings. The flowering shrubs outside the garden, lifting their heads above the garden enclosure, add a charm to the scene quite in tune with the floral effects within, and the sinuous outline of the border plantation is in perfect harmony with the naturalistic aspect of the garden from without. At desirable viewpoints the planting should be low so that a glimpse may be had of the lawn, plantations or distant scenes.

Fig. 134. - Annuals used as a border in a garden with turf walks, showing a good treatment of walks, beds and plants. The arrangement and growth are such that the outline of the beds are lost in the general scene, the whole making a pleasing picture. - See page 162.

Fig. 135. - Evergreens in the garden should be placed at regular intervals. These are well arranged at the corners and ends of beds where they are bisected by the walks. - See page 163.
