Paeonia officinalis is the most common of the peonies. It has an attractive, deep green, divided foliage, with semi-double, sweet-scented flowers.

All of the hybrid varieties are gross feeders and thrive best in deep rich soils. Peonies are very attractive in borders with other perennials, or in groups in front of shrubs.
