Present name. - Morphia. C17H19No3,H1O.
May be obtained from the operative chemists.
Characters and Tests. - In short, colourless, rectangular prisms, soluble in rectified spirit, but requiring 1,000 parts of cold water for solution. Nearly insoluble in ether, but freely soluble in Caustic Potash. In solution it has a bitter taste, and strong alkaline reaction; moistened with Nitric Acid, it becomes orange-red, and with solution of Perchloride of Iron greenish-blue.
