The principal use of benzoic acid in cutaneous therapeutics is in connection with ointments and cerates. The addition of ten to twenty grains to the ounce tends to prevent rancidity, and proves useful as a mild stimulant when such action is desirable. Benzoic acid is soluble in about 200 parts of water.
