The food requirements of an army have always been the subject of extremely careful investigation. The following figures compiled during the late war are of interest for two reasons: they show the comparatively high calorific requirement of the American soldier (somewhat related to the state of prosperity of the country in which he lives), and the decidedly different requirement of the soldier when in camp and in the field.
