Remember that the words lie, lies, lay, lying, and lain refer to being in a certain position, while the words lay, lays, laid, and laying refer to putting into that position. The word lay is in both groups. When it refers to being in a certain position, it expresses past time. When it refers to putting into that position, it expresses present time or any time.
