Moses distinctly states: " I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights; 1 neither did eat bread nor drink water"; and then upon his return to the mount, after breaking the first two tables of stone, he adds: "And I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water, because of all your sins." (Deut. ix. 9, 18). Of Elijah it is stated that he was miraculously fed (I. Kings xix. 5-8), and "went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights." Of the Saviour it is said (Matt. iv. 2), "He fasted forty days and forty nights." This was "in the wilderness." (See page 65).
