Arjisii or Erjish Dagh (anc. Argœus), the loftiest mountain of Asia Minor, lying 13 m. S. of Kaisariyeh (anc. Mazaca Cœsarea in Cappa-docia), and 117 m. N. by W. from the head of the bay of Iskanderun. It ascends in an insulated peak to the height of 13,100 ft. It is distinctly visible at a distance of 160 m., and it was believed by the ancients that both the Euxine and the Mediterranean could be seen from its summit. It is an extinct volcano, and its sloping sides are covered with volcanic cones and craters. Its summit is covered with perpetual snow, and the natives of the country affirm that it has never been ascended.
