Figieras, a town of Spain, in the province of Gerona, Catalonia, situated on the road from Perpignan to Barcelona, 21 m. N. N. E. of Gerona and 14 m. from the French frontier; pop. about 10,500. The citadel or castle of San Fernando is regarded as one of the strongest fortresses of Spain. It was built about the middle of the 18th century, and will serve as an intrenched camp for 16,000 men. It was, however, captured by the French in 1808, retaken by the Spaniards in 1811, again captured by the French in the same year, and also in 1823.
