3857. Dilute Sulphuric Acid. The officinal strength of this acid, according to the U. S. Pharmacopoeia, is thus obtained: Take 2 troy ounces sulphuric acid; add gradually to it 14 fluid ounces distilled water; filter through paper, and pass sufficient distilled water through the filter to make the diluted acid measure 1 pint. The specific gravity of this mixture is 1.082. The officinal strength of the British Pharmacopoeia is somewhat greater; sufficient distilled water is added to 1350 grains sulphuric acid, so that, after it has been shaken and cooled down to
60° Fahr., it measures 1 imperial pint. The specific gravity of this is 1.094.
3858. Nordhausen Sulphuric Acid. This is also known as fuming sulphuric acid. It is a brown, oily liquid, which fumes in the air, is intensely corrosive, and has a specific gravity of about 1.900, and is chiefly used for dissolving indigo. It is prepared by distilling calcined sulphate of iron (green vitriol) in an earthen retort.
