Gasometer. The capacious receptacle of gas, after it has been evolved in there torts, and whence it is pressed into pipes for consumption. It consists of a vessel inverted in water, and the gas passes under it, and raises it up by its elasticity on momenta, till it is full, and waen wanted, weights are placed upon it. D is the pipe from the retort, or furnace, A ; F is the tank filled with water; G is the gasometer or vessel inverted; and V the pulleys by which the weight, W, regulates the gasometer in ascent and descent.
