[AS. acern, from acer, a field.] The seed or fruit of the oak, growing in a woody cup. Acorns contain starch and oil, and generally have a bitter taste. They are eaten freely by swine, while the fruit of some species are sweet and nutritious and are eaten by man. The oil has been used in cookery and for other purposes.
