[Arab, al-jebr, reduction of parts to a whole.] A sort of universal arithmetic, in which the unknown terms are expressed by letters of the alphabet, and dealt with as if known. By this means very intricate problems can be solved, which would be impossible with ordinary figures. In the higher mathematics algebra is of extreme importance.
