[Span. anchova.] A small fish of the Herring family, but not more than three inches long, caught in vast numbers in the Mediterranean, and pickled for exportation. The fishermen go out during the night, carrying torches in their boats. The fish see the light, and swim up to the boats in great numbers, when they are scooped up with nets.
