[Gk. anthrax, coal.] A species of hard mineral coal or carbon, of a metallic lustre, containing little or no bitumen. It is difficult to ignite, but burns with intense heat, and nearly without smell, smoke, or flame. It is principally found in Eastern Pennsylvania, and is said also to be abundant in China.
