A large animal of the Ox family, of which only two species remain, one in America and one in Europe. Its most striking difference from the ox is in the bump behind the neck, the longer limbs and shaggy head and shoulders. The American bison, commonly but wrongly called buffalo, was formerly Very abundant, but has been nearly exterminated. Of the European bison only one herd remains. The bison is about 10 feet long, 6 feet high, and is very strong.
