The substance called by this name has no lead in its composition, but consists of graphite or plumbago, one of the forms of carbon. It gets its name from the mark it makes on paper, like that made by lead. The best known is found at Ticonderoga, New York, this being of almost pure carbon. It is used to make lead pencils, being ground and compressed into shape. It is also used for stove blacking, mixed with clay to form crucibles, which have to stand great heat, and for other purposes.
