A vessel in which water is boiled to produce steam, for engine purposes. It is usually a large, cylindrical receptacle of iron, though boilers are frequently made of tubes, where rapid steam-making is desired. The boilers in use to warm buildings are commonly made of wrought iron, though copper is sometimes used.
