[AS.] The rudiment of a branch, a leaf, or a flower. In biennial and perennial plants buds are formed towards the close of the growing season in the axils of the leaves. Terminal buds are those at the end of branches, and lateral buds are those at the sides. Buds are usually protected from the frost during winter by a covering of scales. The buds of plants growing in tropical countries have no special covering.
