[Gk. sman, to rub.] A variety of corundum, occurring in grains or powder, and very hard. It is glued on cloth, paper, or the rim of a wheel, and used for grinding and polishing hard substances. It is found in the island of Naxos, in the Grecian Archipelago, and other places.
