[Gk. letter gam ma; and L. ut.] The notes of the musical scale, arranged by Guido d'Arezzo in the tenth century, with ut and gamma at the ends. The sol-fa words were taken by D' Arezzo from the first syllables of six lines of a hymn to St. John the Baptist: Ut queant laxis Resonare fibris Mira gestorum Famuli tuorum Solve polluti Labii reatum Sancte Joannes.
