This is the evening of the 31st of October, so called as being the eve of All-Hallows, or festival of All-Saints, which falls on the 1st of November. It is a night on which spirits, good and evil, are supposed to be abroad and witches to hold high holiday. Then nuts and apples are in great demand, and are used for the purpose of foretelling future events in love affairs. In the north of England Hallowe'en is known as Nutcrack Night.
