A small animal of the rat family, found in Scandinavia and Finland. It is a vegetable feeder, and is remarkable for its occasional migrations, in which bands of immense multitudes pass from the mountains to the sea. Great numbers are destroyed by carnivorous birds and animals and thousands are drowned, few living to return.
