A boat constructed for saving persons in cases of shipwreck. Its chief qualities are strength, to resist the violence of waves, a rocky beach, or collision with the wreck ; buoyancy, to avoid foundering when a sea is shipped ; ability to right itself when capsized, facility in turning, and provision for speedy launching.
