The lines of longitude are a series of imaginary lines which surround the earth at right angles to the equator and pass through the poles. Longitude is measured along the equator east or west from a standard line or meridian, that of Greenwich, England, being usually employed. The length of. degree of longitude decreases north and south from the equator, and vanishes at the poles, where the lines all meet.
