[L. musculus.] The name applied to several common bivalve shell-fish, of which the common sea-mussel is the most important, and is largely used as bait for deep-sea fishing. In some districts of Europe it is used as an article of food. Near Rochelle, in France, there are large "mussel farms," and hundreds of people are employed in planting and gathering the mussels.
