A well sunk to underground beds of petroleum. It consists of iron pipes sunk into the earth, following a drill which cuts an opening downward. Some of these wells are sunk to a great depth, the total number in the whole earth reaching probably 100,000. The oil sometimes flows out and sometimes is obtained by pumping.
