A fabulous bird of antiquity, eagle-like in form, and with gold and crimson plumage. It was said to live 500 years in the desert, then return to Egypt and build a nest. In this it was consumed, and a new bird sprang from its ashes. The word is now used in a metaphorical sense, to indicate the springing of the new from the old.
