A fish resembling the herring, but smaller, thicker, and rounder, found in abundance off the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, England. Most of the pilchards landed there are salted and sent to Spain, Italy, and France. They are packed in hogsheads, each containing about 3,000 fishes, and from 12,000 to 15,000 hogsheads are annually exported.
