Wax used for sealing letters or for being marked with a seal. Gummed envelopes have almost taken the place of wax for closing envelopes. Wax is made of lac mixed with turpentine and resin ; black wax is colored with ivory black, and red with cinnabar.
[AS., from L, sigillum, a seal.] An engraved stamp for marking wax or wafer to confirm or make sure.
