[L. spectrum-; and Gk. skopeo, I see.] An instrument consisting of a telescope with a prism for separating the rays of light proceeding from the sun and stars or from burning substances, so that, by the relations of the lines to one another, the composition of the sub-stances burned may be ascertained.
