[Span.] An annual plant of the Nightshade family ; also its fruit, which was formerly called love apple. It is of a red or yellow color. The tomato is of South American origin, but is now an important article of diet in the United States, England, France, and Italy. Its stem is weak, its leaves irregular, and both are clothed with hairs of a resinous substance. It has yellow flowers, and its fruit requires a high temperature to ripen.
