Cock, or Galhis, L. a species of the phasianus, too well known to require any description. The cock was first introduced into Europe from Persia, and is eminently distinguished for his courage, especially when opposed to one of his own species, Advantage has been taken of this peculiarity; and, to the disgrace of mankind, the brutal practice of cock-fighting has been reduced to a regular system. In some parts of Asia, cock-fighting furnishes amusement to kings and princes ; and, though it is evidently on the decline in this country, yet it imperiously demands the attention of an enlightened legislature, to eradicate totally this inhuman custom.
